On the third Friday of September we took part in transforming a parking space in the main street of our local neighbourhood, as part of International Park(ing) Day : )
There was a ‘knit-in, a half-pipe, crazy floral arrangements, yoga, push-bike maintenance, crafting, and the Places & Graces kiwi-campsite : )
Our campground was made possible thanks to the fabulous trusting folk at Tristram European who loaned us a Volkswagen California for the day : ) and Botanical Home who provided all our lush greenery.
International Park(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event aimed at raising awareness of the important role that public open space plays in improving the quality of our lives. The day started in 2005 when a San Francisco art and design studio converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since then it has evolved into a global movement, with organisations and individuals creating new forms of temporary public spaces in urban settings throughout the world.
This year in Auckland there were around 40 temporary park-lets set up across the central city, Devonport, Henderson, Panmure and Takapuna, and the event aligned with the Festival of Architecture.
We've started thinking about what next years’ Places & Graces park-let might be… a game of main-street mini golf anyone ? or make-your-own urban sandcastle ?
